Partying and boating just go together, especially during summer in SOFLA! But, boating under the influence ? ?BUI,? is more common than you might think, and presents a serious hazard on the waterways.

On Wednesday, September, 7th, a 72-foot luxury motor yacht, the Time Out, washed up on the beach in West Palm Beach, the result of an accident where alcohol was involved. According to WPTV, the owner of the yacht Thomas Baker, admitted he had been drinking several Long Island Ice Teas before the incident. Baker and his girlfriend had been returning from a cruise to the Bahamas.

Baker, 63, told police he ?failed to navigate his vessel into the Palm Beach Inlet and ran the vessel into the beach.? An arrest report from Palm Beach Police stated Baker had a blood alcohol level of about double the legal limit. He was charged with boating under the influence and has since bonded out of jail.

The two most important things to take away from this incident are that Baker is very lucky that he and his guests were not harmed, and two, it speaks volumes to the advantages of having a qualified captain at the helm of your yacht.
