South African boatbuilder 'Current Marine' has sold what it claims is the lightest 46ft performance cruising catamaran in the world. Wahoo is a four-ton, Schionning-designed 46ft catamaran made from carbon, mast included.
Current Marine owner Julian Kneale says the boat, built on spec and dubbed Wahoo, a G-Force 1400 design, is about 700kg lighter than its nearest rival. The boat was recently sold to an American buyer.
The lightweight construction is based on a combination of carbon and kevlar S-glass, a carbon rotating wing mast and carbon square top mainsail.
Owner Bill Gibbs has said in a statement that Wahoo reached a speed of 20 knots on her first long leg from Tortola to Guadeloupe, surfing down 10ft?15ft waves.
?Current Marine?s construction of hulls, structure and mast are excellent. She is a stiff boat and we took her through some pretty rough conditions where she performed like a champ,? Gibbs concludes.
