The Department of the Navy's Floating Instrument Platform took the step from horizontal to vertical by filling ballast tanks in the stern.

This 335 foot and 700 ton vessel is used for investigation purposes such as acoustics, oceanography, meteorology and marine mammal observation.

Bottom line: this is a do-it-all kind of ship.
